Belly Dance Basics

  • Learn core movements that are the foundation for all belly dance and transition to dance with fluidity and grace.

  • Previous experience - None, all beginner dancers are welcome. This class is also designed for dancers with up to 2 years belly dance tuition

  • Class duration - 1.25 hour

  • 1 lesson per week for 9 weeks (Medance Belly Dance Party in week 10 - see below)


TERM THREE 2010 COMMENCEMENT

Takapuna ...: Tuesday 20 July 2010, 6.45pm

Each week we will learn or refresh the 10 basic belly dance movements (see below) then add complexity and refinement with layers and transitions to create our dance. Each class will start with a warm up, posture overview, instruction and drills on the weekly movement, combinations and mini routines, which will add spacial awareness, layers, arm patterns etc, some dance improvisation will be included in this class as well as a group chroegoraphy, before a final cool down. An introduction to playing zills will be included in this class format. All students may repeat this course as many times as desired, whilst aiming towards at least 2 years of tuition at this level before progressing to the Belly Dance Skills class on Wednesday evenings.
Students are invited to perform their group choreography in costume (optional) at the Medance Belly Dance Party at the end of Term 3, 7.30pm Tuesday 21 September 2010.

Belly Dance Skills


  • Learn how to use your existing dance skills to create improvised dance and complex group choreography.

  • Previous experience - minimum of 2 years belly dance tuition (or equivalent), and has mastered the 10 basic movements of belly dance (see above)

  • Class duration - 1.5 hours

  • 1 lesson per week for 10 weeks


TERM THREE 2010 COMMENCEMENT

Takapuna ...: Wednesday 21 July 2010, 7.15pm

Each week we will take one of the 10 basic movements, develop layers, angles and floor patterns with this movement, then apply it to routines that you can use in your improvised dance and solo choreographies. Each class will start with a warm up, posture overview, drills, combinations, rhythms, improvisation, then a group choreography will be taught, finally a cool down and stretch to balance the body. Students will be continually challenged to improve their technique and prepare their group choreography for performance. Zills, Veil, Wings, Cane, Malaya Leff, and other props will be taught in this class over time and used in group choreography, as well as the folkloric and fusion styles of belly dance. Students will be invited to perform their group choreography in costume at the Medance Belly Dance Party at the end of Term 3, 7.30pm Tuesday 21 September 2010.

Advanced (Level 4)


  • Develop your improvisational skills to performance level, refine your technique and enjoy working with dancers of similar skill level on group choreography for performance

  • Entry requirement - Assessment of competency by tutor.

  • Class duration - 1.5 hours

  • 1 lesson per week for 9 weeks (Medance Belly Dance Party in week 10 - see below)


TERM THREE 2010 COMMENCEMENT

Takapuna ...: Tuesday 20 July 2010, 8pm

This class offers the opportunity to refine your technique with challenging drill segments, and develop your improvisational skills to performance level with complex 15-20 minute music segments, primarily full belly dance routines. The group will work together to keep to performance level a varied set of group choreographies, adding to this repertoire as time permits. Students are also encouraged and assisted to work on their own solo performance pieces within the group structure.
