Introduction to Belly Dancing & Level 1

TERM ONE 2010 COMMENCEMENT
Takapuna ...: Tuesday 9 February 2010, 6.15pm
You will be introduced to the basic belly dance movements, warm up, posture, drills & cool down. I have choreographed new dances especially for this class to make it easy, so that even a complete beginner can master the basics of Belly Dancing. Students will be invited to perform their group choreography at the end of term Medance Belly Dance Party on Tuesday 30 March 2010 (note - your performance is not compulsory!). All students may repeat this course as many times as desired before progressing to the Level 1 & 2 belly dance class on Wednesday evenings.

Level 1 & 2
- Learn how to use and combine core movements and transition to dance with fluidity and grace.
- Previous experience - Medance Level 1 course or similar (approx. 6 months of lessons)
- Class duration - 1 hour
- 1 lesson per week for 8 weeks
TERM ONE 2010 COMMENCEMENT
Takapuna ...: Wednesday 10 February 2010, 6.30pm
Using the belly dance movements and concepts learnt in the Introduction & Level 1 course, you will drill and develop these to learn combinations and more complex movements. I have created choreographies for this class which include various dance styles, and props such as veil and cane. The introduction of zills/segat whilst dancing is also included at this level, along with rhythm and instrument identification, so that you will learn how to dance to the many beautiful layers of Arabic music. Students will be invited to perform their group choreography in costume at the end of term Medance Belly Dance Party on Tuesday 30 March 2010 (note - your performance is not compulsory!). See the bottom of this page for further details on these events. Most students will complete a minimum of eight courses at Level 1 & 2, before progressing to Level 3.

Level 3
- Learn how to combine all skills learnt perviously to choreograph and perform your own dance.

TERM ONE 2010 COMMENCEMENT

Level 3 offers further development of movement vocabulary, drills and combos, preparation and opportunity for community performance. Adding attitude, layers, complexity and emotion to your dance, development of improvisation technique as well as Level 3 group choreography. Greater understanding of Arabic dance rhythms, and the use of props like sword, and Isis wings. Students will be invited to perform their group choreography in costume at the end of term Medance Belly Dance Party on Tuesday 30 March 2010 (note - your performance is not compulsory!). Most students remain at this level but will be continually challenged with new material.

Level 4 Technique & Improvisation
- Develop your improvisational skills to performance level, refine your technique and listen to your audience shout "wow!".
- Entry requirement - Assessment of competency by tutor.
- Class duration - 1 hour
- 1 lesson per week for 7 weeks (due to Medance Belly Dance Party - see bottom of this page)
TERM ONE 2010 COMMENCEMENT
Takapuna ..: Tuesday 9 February 2010, 7.30pm
Level 4 is taught in two different classes on the same evening due to the many different skills required at this level. In the first half of the course the student will be encouraged to pursue excellence in technique, improvisation to classical as well as modern music (approximately 20 minutes each lesson, including entire performance sets), zill/segat practice and extension, rhythm challenges, as well as knowing how to correctly portray and recognise the different styles of Middle Eastern Dance. If you are an experienced dancer with at least 4 years dance experience and want to take your dance to the next level, then contact me to discuss your placement in this class.
Term 1 2010 : Focus on Technique includes:
Lifts & Drops, Figure 8's & Circles, Shimmies, Veil, Multiple Layers, Undulations in layers, steps and turns.

Level 4 - Choreography/Solo Development
- Learn Level 4 Choreography for group or solo performance and develop your own skills as a solo dancer and choreographer
- Entry requirement - Enrolment into Level 4 Technique & Improvisation
- Class duration - 1 hour
- 1 lesson per week for 8 weeks

This course offers Level 4 choreography that can be used as a group or solo, and solo development for you as a dancer, to create your own challenging choreography for yourself, and later for the group. Students will be invited to perform their solo choreography in costume at the end of term Medance Belly Dance Party on Tuesday 30 March 2010.
